Burke Town School Employee Spotlight: Lisa Colangelo Reed

December 18, 2024

Meet Lisa Colangelo Reed,

Burke Town School 5th & 6th humanities teacher

Lisa Colangelo Reed, also known as Mrs. Reed or Ms. Colangelo to her 5th and 6th grade students, has worked with Burke Town School and Kingdom East School District for 8 years!

Ever since Lisa was a child, she dreamed of becoming a teacher. After returning home from school in the early years of elementary school, Lisa would rush home and play "pretend" school with her sister, mimicking lessons from her favorite teachers.

As she moved through elementary, middle school, high school, and even into college, she encountered her own challenges with learning, as not every concept came easily. Through perseverance and help from her teachers, she was able to find creative ways to help her succeed and push through those challenging times. The patience and encouragement from her favorite teachers meant the world to her, and those moments shaped who she is today.

Through those experiences and the compassion and support of her educators, Lisa realized she wanted to do the same for other kids—to be the kind of teacher who sees each child as an individual and helps them discover their own potential. For Lisa, teaching isn’t just about sharing knowledge. It’s about making a positive, lasting impact on students—supporting them in being creative, finding their passions, and growing into the best versions of themselves.

Mrs. Reed/Ms. Colangelo was asked questions regarding her time at Burke Town School. Below are some of the questions that were asked, followed by her answers.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working in a school?

Answer:  "My favorite part about working in schools is the special connections I’ve made with students, especially the ones that have stayed with me over the years. There’s something truly heartwarming about watching them grow, and knowing that, even after they’ve moved on, a little part of our bond remains. It’s those long-lasting relationships that remind me every day why I love what I do—because teaching is so much more than lessons and assignments; it’s about the people and the impact we have on each other".

Q: What have been some of your favorite moments as an educator?

Answer:  "Some of my absolute favorite moments as an educator are the ones that are all about human connection and shared emotions. There’s nothing quite like the joy of laughing together with a class of kids, where for just a moment, we’re all simply enjoying life and happiness as one. I also love when a student and I can connect on a deeper level, talking about something beyond the lesson at hand—those moments feel so meaningful, like we’re really seeing and understanding each other. It's in those little moments that the heart of teaching really shines".

Q: What are you looking forward to about this school year?

Answer:  "This year, I’m really looking forward to continuing to grow—not just as an educator, but also as a colleague. I’m excited for all the new lessons, both big and small, that I’ll learn from the students and from the wonderful people I get to work alongside. There’s always room to grow, and I’m grateful for the chance to keep learning and connecting with others along the way".

One of Lisa's favorite quotes relating to education is Joseph Campbell's, "The job of an educator is to teach students to see the vitality in themselves," and she embodies this philosophy in her daily teaching practices. She creates a classroom environment that fosters self-discovery and confidence, encouraging students to explore their strengths, talents, and unique perspectives. Through personalized feedback, hands-on activities, and open dialogue, Lisa helps students build a sense of self-worth and a deeper connection to their own learning journey. She values each student’s individuality, pushing them to see challenges as opportunities for growth, and inspiring them to take ownership of their education with enthusiasm and self-assurance. In this way, Lisa not only teaches content but also empowers her students to recognize and nurture the vitality within themselves.

Thank you, Mrs. Reed/Ms. Colangelo, for your dedication to your students at Burke Town School and the Kingdom East School District! Today and every day, we are so thankful to have you as a part of our team!
